How To Get People Excited To Read Your Church Emails

POST IN 10 SECONDS:

STOP: Sending emails that tell people how they can help your church

START: Sending emails that tell people how your church can help them.

If you’re tired of your church sending emails that no one ever reads, here’s the secret to changing that.

Most churches send out weekly emails that only ever get read by a handful of super invested people.

And hardly any church has un-churched people asking to be added to their mailing list.

But what if there was a simple way to start sending emails that people inside and outside of your church actually looked forward to reading?

There is. Here’s the secret:

STOP: Sending emails that tell people how they can help your church

START: Sending emails that tell people how your church can help them.

Let me explain.

I once managed a church email list where people would beg to be added and then would tell all their friends to sign up too. Why?

Because every month, the church I worked for would send out an email providing parents a link to an event where the church would babysit their kids for FREE, while the parents went out and did whatever they wanted to for four hours.

Parents could not wait to open that email because it was about how the church could help them.

You may not be able to offer people free babysitting but your church can provide people with something of value in every email.

  • A short piece of practical, Bible-based advice on how to approach an everyday problem like parenting tips, finances, relationship dynamics or finding your purpose.

  • A story of life-change experienced by someone in your church

  • An activity that parents can do with their kids at home that relates to what’s happening at church

  • A link to an upcoming event happening in your local community that you think your people would want to know about

Get creative!

And you can still tell people about upcoming events and opportunities for them to give and serve at your church.

But instead of framing those things as needs the church has that they can fill, try putting yourself in the shoes of the reader and ask yourself, “How would this add value to my life?”

So, new sermon series starting Sunday?

Instead of “You won’t want to miss it!!!!”, try high-lighting what felt-need your series is speaking to and how coming to hear this series will positively impact their life.

Always try to make sure that the focus of your emails is on helping your audience because people will open emails that they believe will help them solve their problems.

And if you consistently deliver on that promise of helping them, people will want to increase their investment in your church because they know you’ve been investing in them.

So, when writing your next email, try to craft it through the lens of how your church can help meet the needs of your audience.

When you do that consistently, you’ll see your open rate go up and, hopefully, life change will follow!
